Seattle Park & Recreation After School Activities Program
Video Production Class
Location: Asa Mercer Middle School

Native Assimilation by Rose Stiffarm

During the winter/spring semester of the 2002-2003 school year Inye Wokoma partnered with the Seattle Parks and Recreations After School Activity Program at Asa Mercer Middle School to teach video production as an after school class. In an effort increase the value of the class Inye partnered with an eighth grade social studies teacher. Her students had semester research projects as a part of their regular course work and Inye worked with a number of them to create videos as a part of their final presentation.

The video presented here is an example of the student work produced in the class. Rose Stiffarm, a Native American student, enhanced her existing secondary research by going out into her community to interview experts and gather footage relevant to her subject.

About A.S.A.P.

The After School Activities Program is now the Community Learning Center Program. It positions Middle Schools as centers where community-driven learning resources for students, families and the broader community can be found.

By creating an environment of lifelong learners, the Learning Center strives to reinforce and recognize the critical role family and community have, not only in the academic success of the children but in their total development as well.

In 2005 Seattle Parks & Recreation’s A.S.A.P. became C.L.C; Community Learning Centers. The overall mission and structure of the program remained the same.
